2/18/2024 0 Comments Calico ghost town![]() I think the outdoor temperature was 109 when we drove in at early evening. The A/C unit was very strong, and by the middle of the night we let it bring the inside temperature up just a bit because we were actually cold - you won't hear that very often in summertime around this area. The cabins are small, and you need to walk to the bathroom/shower, but each cabin has beds (I believe the solo bed is a double, and twin bunk beds), they each have mattresses but no bedding ON the mattresses (though the mattresses are sturdy, with a vinyl outer shell), and, SO important for a stay in August, each cabin has an A/C unit in addition to an oscillating fan mounted over the window. We reserved a cabin here "for fun" during our Route 66 adventure - given our friends' lack of experience camping, this was a really good introduction. We have camped here since 2006 and boy has it gone down hill over the years.… It’s one line that is for Ghost town and camp ground entrance. If you camp here don’t leave, there is no line for campers already checked in. We left camp ground one time to run errand and had to sit in a 40 minute line to get back In. Atvs, (Atvs all over camp ground and up at the ghost town.) unleashed dogs, swimming pools at rvs?! (One up hill from us dumped pool and flooded 3 sites) Neighbor checked in at 11pm. All toilet seats were nasty, no soap for washing hands. Picnic table was a joke it was all warped. Which was no biggie for us we come prepared. If our door was on the side we’d have been stepping out over neighbors sewer hose and ducking to not hit their slide. Both sides had yellow poles and utilities. You could not walk down either side of our site. Had site B4 fortunately we have a small rv with door on back of unit. ![]() Not only are they cheaper (also don’t charge $3 for the average shower) but they will also be cleaner.… In the end, just go stay at a state park. However, if I am providing literally everything but the spot to park it and less than 24 hours worth of electricity and water, I expected a little more to this site. Maybe there should have been cable but once again, I will allow it. One would assume that the $40 for a one night stay would maybe include WiFi but since it’s the desert I will concede. Thankfully they are easy to move for those who go to eat dinner in Barstow. If you are not at your campsite by 5pm, they will have the road blocked by traffic cones. When the sign says that the park and town closes at 5pm, THEY MEAN IT. Also note that one of these two ‘functional’ bathrooms no longer had a flush button. I believe there were six bathrooms in total and only two were ‘functional.’ One bathroom had NO door, two seemed to be permanently locked, and one would refuse to close fully. Not only do the toilet take brute force to flush (if they even do), you will have to pay $1 to use the shower for six minutes. Lets just say, if you have a camper or RV with sewer and a shower, you’ll want to use those instead. In desperate need of some TLC and guidance. There is a restaurant inside the ghost town where the lunch served was decent. Good for a pitstop, one nite, maybe two(?), but that's about it.Perfect if you want to squeeze a visit into Calico Ghost Town for a few hours. It has all the facilities you need, in a campground (running water/restrooms/showers, etc.), just not taken care of! The campground has a Great location, a few short miles off the interstate, plenty of stores/fuel stops in Barstow, including Walmart to stock up on food & supplies just a few minutes away. This RV campground could be a Gem, if the State of California would only take care of it. The only positives were the Full Hookups at our site and the free admission to Calico Ghost Town, which is well worth a visit. It served our purpose of a one nite stopover while transporting our airstream home. ![]() ![]() A fair amount of trash scattered about the area. The sites are a mix of gravel and larger rocks, some sites seem "smoother" and more level than others. This is a very basic State Park campground that needs a lot of TLC.
